DHL Hub in Leipzig to be realized as planned
Construction and opening of hub not impacted by EU Commission probe against Saxony
Bonn, 11/22/2006, 10:30 AM CETCommenting on today's decision of the European Commission to initiate a probe into possible subsidies of the Federal State of Saxony, Deutsche Post World Net states:
The construction of DHL's European hub at the Leipzig/Halle airport and the planned opening in 2008 are not compromised by the European Commission's decision to commence a state aid investigation. DHL is fully committed to operate one of its three global air hubs in Leipzig/Halle.
In connection with the construction of the hub, the European Commission in 2004 already looked into and fully approved financial support in the amount of 70.8 million euros paid to DHL. The probe initiated today solely concerns issues between the European Commission and the Federal State of Saxony.
One of these issues, regarding provisions against risks related to whether an around-the-clock hub operation will be possible, has in the meantime evidently been resolved: The Federal Administrative Court of Germany has already ruled that 24-hours operations will be possible for DHL long term.
