No strike over working time
Deutsche Post and ver.di are working on bargaining solution
Bonn, 12/23/2006, 10:30 AM CETAn escalation of the conflict over working time between the ver.di labor union and Deutsche Post has been avoided. At a top-level talk on Saturday regarding the controversial working time regulations, both sides agreed to strive for a mutual solution at the bargaining table in the first half of 2007. The existing regulations will continue unchanged until then, and the announced strike will not take place.
Background: the normal 41-hour work week for federal civil servants was supposed to take effect for Deutsche Post's federal civil servants starting January 1. As a result, ver.di had denounced the negotiated working time regulations for employees and threatened a massive strike.
Walter Scheurle, Board Member Personnel and Labor Director of Deutsche Post: "Considering the interests of customers and employers, I think this agreement is sensible. It also means that there is no longer any danger of a January strike at Deutsche Post. Both sides have obtained breathing space for themselves, space that must now be intensively used to work out a solution for this also politically difficult question".
