Postage by cell phone
Deutsche Post's new cell phone postage makes franking letters and postcards now also possible without a stamp
Bonn, 08/15/2008, 11:30 AM CEST
All that is required is to send a text message with "Brief" or "Karte" to 22122 or to phone the number. Within a few seconds the sender receives a twelve-digit code.
Writing this code onto the envelope or postcard is enough to frank the item correctly. The flexible service has been available since August 15 as a market test in co-operation with the network operators T-Mobile and Vodafone. Registration is not required.
"With our innovative service we are fulfilling the expectations of the increasingly mobile society," said Marco Hauprich, head of New Technologies at Deutsche Post. "We are using the popular communications medium, the cell phone, in a completely new way and at the same time making franking independent of location and time for the first time."
Deutsche Post is initially providing HANDYPORTO postage for postcards and standard letters. The price is EUR0.85 and EUR0.95 respectively plus the network operator's costs for the text message or phone call and is invoiced directly via the service provider.
