Deutsche Post World Net joins World Business Council for Sustainable Development
- Membership underscores Group's global commitment to climate protection
- Goal is to combine environmental interests with business growth
Deutsche Post World Net has joined the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
The highly respected international organization seeks practical approaches to balancing economic, environmental and social interests and aims to foster the dialogue between business and politics.
The Geneva-based group has around 200 members from 37 countries and 22 sectors, including many of the Group's business partners.
"The WBCSD and Deutsche Post World Net pursue very similar goals in the area of sustainability - combining environmental interests with business growth," Chief Executive Officer Frank Appel said. "It's therefore the ideal platform for us to share our experiences in setting up sustainable structures as a global logistics service provider with business in more than 220 countries. With our carbon-neutral GoGreen services and our climate-protection goals we can show that sustainability also pays off from a commercial point of view." In return, Deutsche Post World Net expects to learn from other companies.

One of the primary goals of the WBCSD is to shape the political framework governing sustainable development. The group among others helped develop the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, which is globally recognized as the standard for measuring and reporting green-house gas emissions.
A key aspect of the WBCSD's work is that its members commit themselves to actively share their know how and support their actions by providing the appropriate human resources. The commitment also includes the chief executive officers who as members of the council personally promote the achievement of WBCSD's goals.
Focus on climate protection strengthened
In addition to becoming a member of the WBCSD, Deutsche Post World Net has also joined the U.N. initiative "Caring for Climate." The initiative is part of "Global Compact" in which 10 principles in the areas of human rights, job protection, the fight against corruption and environmental protection are defined.
Commenting on the new membership, Winfried Häser, Director of Environmental Strategy and Policy at Deutsche Post World Net, said: "Climate protection is any central component to our sustainability strategy. Because of this, our membership in 'Caring for Climate' represents a sensible and effective expansion of our activities in this area."
Deutsche Post World Net has set a goal to improve CO2 efficiency by 30 percent at the company and its subcontractors by the year of 2020. To achieve this goal, carbon-dioxide emissions for every letter mailed, for every ton transported or for every square meter of spaced used is to be reduced by nearly one-third compared with 2007.
